What About Functionality?

In the argument for design, it can be said that the world is special in that it's artifacts as well as organisms are directed towards functionality; they are goal-directed. Functionality can be defined as the purpose of goal fulfilled by an object or person. This functionality goes to imply the existent of a conscious, and most times, intelligent, designer.

Functions and adaptions are often typical things that Christians will point to in order to prove God's existence such as the incredible structure of the human ear that enables us to hear speech and music.

However, the Big Bang Theory states that creation acknowledges functionality, but it is by natural selection - thus rejecting the idea of the intelligent designer.

An evolutionist would argue along the lines of humans secreting sweat to make our bodies stay cool. This happens now because of evolution and natural selection - not because of an intelligent designer, but because of billions of years and the survival of the fittest.

Lastly, there is also an argument that states that there is neither functionality nor a designer. It states that humans appeared in the environment without natural selection and by accident. This puts us as humans - the most natural model of complexity and design - as beings with no purpose.

I'll leave with a quote by John Henry Newman, a leader of the Anglican church in the 1800s, a believer of intelligent design: I believe in design because I believe in God; not in a God because I see design

How Creation Was Written

The key to all debate in Christian creation theories has to do with the terminology in Genesis 1 and 2. In these chapters, it states that God created the world in 6 days, and on the seventh, he rested. Do these days mean literal 24 hour periods in which we live or were these days figurative? Clearly, the Big Bang Theory relies on billions of years for creation whilst the young-earth creationists believe that the Bible can be interpreted as a literal text.

It is argued that the Bible can be studied literally and thus, the six days can be translated as exactly six days. These people also argue that progressive creationists and theistic evolutionsts are trying to make evolution harmonize with the Bible and are thus, making exceptions.

However, it can also be argued that the creation Bible story was told as an oral tradition for hundreds of years, as it was not written at the exact moment of creation. It isn't a factual representation so much as a story God has given to his people to relate the creation of a universe to a people constricted by time. God himself has no boundaries of time and thus was trying to make the story as relatable as possible.

The hebrew word for "day" as written in Genesis 1 is "yom", which can be translated similarly as day is in English - it can mean a literal day or it can be undefined. The meaning behind it can work for either argument!

Are there other arguments that could be used in the study of how Genesis was constructed?

The Chosen Method of Creation?

296 We believe that God needs no pre-existent thing or any help in order to create, nor is creation any sort of necessary emanation from the divine substance. God creates freely "out of nothing":

This quote, from the Catechism, clearly states our belief that God needed no help, or the right atmosphere/conditions or any sort of cosmic bang. But what if he created the Big Bang? What if we took a theistic approach and decided that evolution can and is happening because God designed it, and allowed it to be so?

The catechism also states that if God had made the world from a pre-existent state, nothing would be very extraordinary about that. A normal every day artist can take something and make something entirely new, so God doing the same thing is hardly going to come up on anyone's radar.

But perhaps God created the conditions and circumstances for the so called "Big Bang Theory"? (Bg Bang Theory = BBT) Maybe what makes the BBT so incredible and so hard to believe all at the same time is this concept that something appeared where before there was nothing - and maybe God had arranged it to be that way!

Could God have made it so that the BBT was, indeed, his creation? I mean, obviously, God can do whatever he pleases, but do you think he chose this as his method to create the world or is this a bit of a stretch for the whole evolution-creation debate?

Three Stances on Creation

With evolution being a very strong belief among many people, especially in the science community, it can be hard for Christians to reconcile our Biblical creation story with the evolutionary thoughts of today. It is a very broad topic and Christians tend to fall into three main categories as they determine their beliefs on the creation story as it co-exists with the science of today.

First, there are young-earth believers. These people believe that the Earth is less than 10 000 years old and that creation happened in literally 6 days.

Secondly, we have the progressive creationists. In this context, we believe that God created the world over a span of millions or billions of years using 'miracles' to put things into life.

Lastly, we have theistic evolution, which is where we believe that God chose evolution as his form of creating the world. He created everything from the physical structures to the complex organisms in the manner that they would naturally evolve.

When faced with today's science and all of its discoveries, it can be hard to tell how creation happened exactly, so those three explanations are the most common.

Do you find yourself believing in one, or do you have a different rationale? Why?
